2017 Annual Report
The Western District of Missouri Historical Society (Howard Sachs Chapter) sponsored four successful and well-attended programs during the period from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. The first was on July 15, 2016 and featured University of Missouri Professors, James W Endersby and William T Horner, who spoke about their book on Lloyd Gaines, an African-American, who successfully challenged the University of Missouri's denial of his application to its School of Law. The program was attended by a number of law students interning with Kansas City law firms for the summer, as well as by interested members of the Bar.
The second program, on December 2, 2016, highlighted a recent book on Civil War Officer and lighthouse architect, General Godfrey Weitzel, which was written by local Kansas City architect and attorney, G. William Quatman.
The third program of the year was co- sponsored by the Western District Historical Society and the Truman Library Institute and took place on January 12, 2017. It brought best-selling author and national Supreme Court commentator, Jeffry Rosen, to a standing- room -only auditorium at the Kansas City Library ( Plaza Branch ) to speak on the topic of President Trump's potential Supreme Court nominees and the likely impact they will make.
The fourth program, which was on April 21, 2017, spotlighted University of Missouri-Kansas City Law Professor, Douglas O. Linder, as he spoke about a number of notable trials in United States history, including the Alabama trial of nine African American teenagers accused of raping two white women in 1931.
As of June 30, 2017, the Western District Historical Society had a balance of $11,048.09 in its bank account.
