On October 17, 2018, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit held the portrait ceremony of Judge Roger L. Wollman.

U.S. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Lavenski R. Smith presided over the ceremony in courtroom 5A of St. Paul's federal courthouse. Three of Judge Wollman’s law clerks, two former and one current, spoke with respect and gratitude: Jerod E. Tufte, Justice, North Dakota Supreme Court; John D. Inazu, the Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor of Law and Religion at Washington University in St. Louis; and Amy N. Softich, Career Law Clerk. Judge James B. Loken spoke of Judge Wollman as a wonderful colleague, and artist Jason Bouldin introduced the portrait, which was unveiled by grandchildren Katherine and John Wollman, with Bouldin’s assistance. Judge David Hansen, listed on the program, was unable to attend. The ceremony closed with the remarks of Judge Wollman and was followed by a reception.

As speakers provided insight into Judge Wollman’s character, similar traits were echoed. They described him as humble, genuine, kind, patient, wise, and honorable. They likewise described him as hard-working, diligent, precise, fair, and dedicated to his family and the law. Judge Loken called him a “judge’s judge” and said that the quote believed to come from Socrates “perfectly” describes Judge Wollman: “Four things belong to a judge: to hear courteously, to answer wisely, to consider soberly, and to decide impartially.”
