120 Years of Judicial Legacy
Iowa's Eighth Circuit Judges 1869-1989

This exhibit, featured at the 2018 Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference in Des Moines, honors Iowa's Eighth Circuit judges who have passed away: John F. Dillon (1869-1879), George W. McCrary (1879-1884), Walter I. Smith (1911-1922), William S. Kenyon (1922-1933), Seth Thomas (1935-1962), Martin D. Van Oosterhout (1954-1979), Roy L. Stephenson (1971-1982), and George G. Fagg (1982-2015).

The display profiles each judge, outlines the succession of the court of appeals seat traditionally allotted to Iowa, and provides a brief historical background of the evolution of the U.S. Circuit Courts for the Eighth Circuit to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
