New District Judge for District of South Dakota: Jeffrey L. Viken

Jeffrey L. Viken was born in Huron, South Dakota. He received his undergraduate degree in 1974 and his law degree in 1977 from the University of South Dakota.

From 1977 to 1981, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of South Dakota. During his time there, he served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney and later as Acting U.S. Attorney.

He worked in private practice in Rapid City from 1981 to 2003, specializing in criminal and civil litigation in federal court. From 2003 to present he served as the Federal Public Defender for North and South Dakota.

He will serve in Rapid City, replacing U.S. District Judge Piersol, who assumed senior status in July. Welcome, Judge Viken!
