Retirement: Judge Mary Kay Klein

The Honorable Mary Kay Klein, part-time Magistrate Judge for the District of Minnesota retired on June 30, 2014. She was sworn in on January, 3, 2003, succeeding Judge Randall Burg.

Judge Klein was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She graduated with honors from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in 1973, and received her J.D. from the University of North Dakota Law School in 1980.

After completing a two year federal clerkship in 1982 with North Dakota’s Chief Judge Paul Benson, Klein entered private practice in Bemidji, Minnesota as a solo practitioner with Klein Law Firm Ltd., focusing on family, personal injury and school law, as well as mediation. The part-time nature of her appointment allowed Judge Klein to continue her private practice while serving on the federal bench.

She is a member of the American Bar Association, Minnesota State Bar Association, Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association, Council of School Board Attorneys, and the Beltrami County Bar Association.
