‘Open Doors to Federal Courts’

On December 2, 2010, the Eastern District of Missouri hosted an ‘Open Doors to Federal Courts’ outreach program in St. Louis’ Thomas F. Eagleton U.S. Courthouse.

Chief Judge Catherine D. Perry welcomed 70 students from Francis Howell North High School who participated in a mock courtroom proceeding with U.S. District Judge Jean C. Hamilton, Courtroom Deputy Carrie Lippold, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Mehan, Federal Public Defender Cathy Ditraglia, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Mark Moore. Together, they simulated a motion hearing and witness examinations stemming from a search at a fictional high school house party, based on the Supreme Court’s 2006 “knock and announce” decision in Hudson v. Michigan. The students also toured the courthouse and visited the Judicial Learning Center.

The ‘Open Doors’ program objectives include connecting with the community, teaching students about the judicial system, exposing them to careers in the law, and increasing their willingness to serve on juries when called in the future.
