November/December 2010
New District Judge for the District of Minnesota: Susan R. Nelson

On December 17, 2010, the Senate confirmed Susan Richard Nelson as a U.S. District Judge for the District of Minnesota. She fills the vacancy created when Judge James M. Rosenbaum took senior status.

Judge Nelson has served as a Magistrate Judge for the district since June of 2000. Prior to serving on the federal bench, she practiced civil trial law for 22 years, primarily in complex product liability and mass tort matters, including her service on the team representing the State of Minnesota and Blue Cross in the landmark 1998 Minnesota Tobacco Trial. She received her undergraduate degree from Oberlin College (Ohio) in 1974 and her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978.

Her oath of office was administered by Chief U.S. District Judge Michael J. Davis in a private ceremony. Her public investiture ceremony will be held at a later date.
