More Blackmun Files Available on Library on Congress Site
You may recall a previous
newsletter article about the
release of Justice Harry A.
Blackmun’s collection of
papers in March of this year. The papers were
given to the Library of Congress by Justice
Blackmun in 1997, and in accordance with his
wishes, they were made available to the public on
the 5 anniversary of his death.
The collection consists of 1585 boxes that
contain diaries, draft opinions, personal
correspondence and other papers spanning the
Justice’s entire legal career. In addition there are
38 hours of oral history recorded on video by
Harold Hongju Koh, Yale law professor and
former law clerk to Justice Blackmun.
The entire collection is available for viewing in
person at the Library of Congress’ Manuscript
Division Reading Room in Washington, D.C.
Until recently, however, much of the material
was only available on the reading room’s internal
web site. Fortunately, the oral history videos as
well as the comprehensive transcript are now
available on the Library of Congress’ public web
site. Check them out at
http://www.loc.gov/rr/mss/blackmun/ .
