May/June 2010
Judge Gerald Heaney, 1918-2010

We are very sad to report that Eighth Circuit Judge Gerald W. Heaney passed away on June 22. Judge Heaney served nearly 40 years as a federal judge, from his appointment by President Lyndon B. Johnson in November 1966 until his full retirement in August 2006.

He played a major role in school desegregation cases and was the co-author of Unending Struggle: The Long Road to an Equal Education in St. Louis. A memorial article on Judge Heaney will be included in our next issue.

Click here for the page created by the librarians of the 8th Circuit dedicated to the great life and work of Judge Heaney. You will find career highlights and a transcript of a 2001 oral history discussing his service in WW II, as well as a bibliography of work by and about Judge Heaney.
