Southern District of Iowa Celebrates Anniversay of Brown v. Board of Education
On April 30, 2004, the U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of Iowa celebrated the 50th
anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in
Brown v. Board of Education by conducting a reenactment
of the oral argument.
Thurgood
Marshall’s opening argument was presented by
Brian Gentry, legal advisor to Governor Vilsack.
Federal Public Defender Nick Drees presented
defense attorney John Davis’ argument. Judge
Don Nickerson of Iowa’s 5th Judicial District
presented Thurgood Marshall’s rebuttal. U.S.
District Court Judge Robert Pratt played the part
of Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court.
Following the re-enactment, Allan C. Page,
Justice of the Supreme Court of Minnesota gave
the keynote speech entitled, “The Brown Decision
50 Years Later.”
