Bio: Jeri Kay Hopkins, Branch Librarian, Omaha
I grew up in Nebraska and obtained a BS Degree
in Sociology from Wayne State College, Wayne,
Nebraska. As with most Nebraskans, I was born
a Nebraska Cornhusker fan.
Major events in my life have been
planned around this fact.
First, I
was ordered to attend law school
at the University of Nebraska-
Lincoln by my family because it
was the only way they would ever be able to
attend the Cornhusker football games. So every
football Saturday for three years, I cheered for the
Cornhuskers – except for those weekends when a
family member borrowed my ticket!
Second, I became engaged after attending a
Cornhusker game with my, now, husband. I have
always wondered if he would have asked me if we
had lost that game?
Third, we had to have our
wedding on Labor Day weekend so that the
wedding on Sunday would not interfere with the
football game on Saturday. Even with that, the
rehearsal and dinner had to wait until after the
game. To this day, you will find me and my
husband every football Saturday either watching
the Huskers on TV or listening to them on the
radio.
My professional library experience began while
attending the University of Nebraska. I worked in
the law library there. After I had been practicing
law for a several years, I was asked to serve as a
Trustee on the local library board. I did this for
approximately four years, three of them as the
Treasurer. I also worked in the library during my
free time where I gained a much wider
understanding of Library Science. I found that I
enjoyed it so much that I decided to obtain a
Masters degree from the University of Missouri-
Columbia. I am currently in the process of
achieving that goal.
I am thrilled to be the new Branch Librarian for
Omaha. I am enjoying getting to know the
wonderful people of the Eighth Circuit.
