In Memoriam: Judge Robert G. Renner
On March 1, 2005, Judge Robert
George Renner, senior judge for
the District of Minnesota, passed
away at the age of 81.
Robert Renner was born on April 2, 1923 in
Nevis, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army
from 1943 to 1946. He received his bachelor’s
degree from Saint John’s University in 1947. He
received his law degree from Georgetown
University Law School in 1949.
After graduating he practiced privately in
Walker, Minnesota from 1949 to 1969. He also
served as a Minnesota state representative from
1957 to 1969. From 1969 to 1977 he served as
U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. In
1977 he was appointed as a U.S. Magistrate
Judge for the District of Minnesota, where he
served until he was appointed as a District Court
judge in 1980. He assumed senior status in
1992.
U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery
remembers Judge Renner as a judge who
“epitomized fairness... He was always true to his
Walker, Minnesota, roots and was totally
without pretense.”
Judge Renner is survived by his wife, Colleen,
sons Richard and David, and daughter, Anne.
