The 8th Circuit Remembers Judge Richard Sheppard Arnold
On January 10, 2004, the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the Eighth
Circuit held a memorial session
in honor of Judge Richard
Sheppard Arnold. Judge Arnold passed away in
September of 2004. The session took place in the
en banc courtroom on the 28 floor of the th
Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse in St. Louis,
Missouri.
The session was attended by Judge Arnold’s
family, friends, and legal colleagues from around
the country as well as court staff and members of
the Eighth Circuit Bar Association. Speakers
offered thoughtful and fond remembrances of the
judge as they shared their personal experiences
and insights about him. Those speakers included
Judge Arnold’s brother Judge Morris Sheppard
Arnold of the Eighth Circuit, Senator Dale
Bumpers, Philip Anderson, Polly Price, Price
Marshall, James Layton, Judge Deanell R. Tacha
of the Tenth Circuit, Judge Donald P. Lay of the
Eight Circuit, and Judge Theodore McMillian of
the Eighth Circuit.
A short reception was
held after the session,
just outside the en
banc courtroom where
attendees could look at
the library’s display
about Judge Arnold’s
career and family. Many thanks to Judge
Arnold’s wife, Kay Kelly Arnold, and Judge
Morris Sheppard Arnold for so generously
sharing the many photographs and other items
that were used in the display.
A full transcript of the memorial session will
appear in the Federal Reporter in the coming
months. We will let you know of the citation as
soon as it becomes available.
