Retirement: Judge James R. Marschewski

Judge James R. Marschewski, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Arkansas in Fort Smith, will retire January 1, 2015. He was appointed on January 3, 2007 to succeed Judge Beverly Stites Jones. He has served as the District’s Chief Magistrate Judge since January 1, 2010. Judge Marschewski was born in Helena, Arkansas in 1946. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1970 and his law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1973. He worked in private practice in Illinois and Russellville, Arkansas from 1974 until 1986. He also served as part-time deputy prosecuting attorney for Pope County, Arkansas from 1980 until 1986, when he was appointed Public Defender for Sebastian County. In 1998, he was elected as a circuit judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit of the State of Arkansas, where he served until his appointment to the federal bench.
