New Judge for W.D. of Missouri: Stephen F. Bough

On December 16, 2014, the Senate confirmed Stephen R. Bough as a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Missouri. He succeeds Judge Fernando J. Gaitan, who took senior status on January 3, 2014.

Judge Bough was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1970. He graduated from Missouri State University with a B.S. in political science in 1993 and from the University of Missouri—Kansas City School of Law in 1997. He served as editor-in-chief of the UMKC Law Review.

Following law school, Judge Bough clerked for Judge Scott O. Wright of the Western District of Missouri for two years. He then served as Judge Pro Tem for the City of Roeland Park, Kansas from 1999-2001. In 1999 Bough entered private practice with the firm Shamberg, Johnson & Bergman, where he worked until 2002. From 2002-2006 he practiced law at Henning & Bough, and in 2006 he founded The Law Offices of Stephen R. Bough, which specialized in insurance coverage and plaintiff personal injury litigation.

Judge Bough has been active in numerous legal and civic organizations, including three years on the Missouri Bar board of governors, and has received awards and mentions for his academic achievement, legal leadership, and trial advocacy. Among them are the Missouri Bar Foundation’s Lon O. Hocker Award for proficiency in trial advocacy, 2005; Best of the Bar, a publication of the Kansas City Business Journal, annually since 2004; Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers annually since 2005; Missouri Lawyers Weekly “Winningest” Plaintiff Attorney, 2011; and Most Reported Plaintiff Lawyer Wins, 2012 and 2013.
