Incoming Senior Staff Attorney Danette E. Silva

Danette E. Silva became the Senior Staff Attorney for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit on February 1, 2018. She has been serving as Senior Staff Attorney Designee since December 2017 to succeed Kim P. Jones, who retired January 31, 2018.
Danette was born in Belize and moved to St. Louis with her parents and siblings in 1984. She graduated in 1999 from Webster University with a bachelorís degree in psychology and in history, politics, and law. She graduated with her J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2003, summa cum laude and first in class. She received a number of academic awards, and is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities. She served as Senior Articles Editor for the Saint Louis-Warsaw Transatlantic Law Journal and was a teaching assistant for Legal Research & Writing. She also served as an extern for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Theodore McMillian.
Danette began her legal career in 2003 as a term staff attorney for the Eighth Circuit, and in 2005 earned a position as a career staff attorney. During her 11 years with the Staff Attorneys she was assigned to (now Chief) Judge Lavenski Smith and provided special assistance to the Senior Staff Attorney by taking responsibility for a variety of administrative projects and duties. She left the Court in 2014 to join the in-house legal department at Centene Corporation (a Fortune 100 company), where she worked as Corporate Counsel and then Regional General Counsel until returning to the Court in December.
