New Magistrate Judge for the District of Nebraska: Susan M. Bazis
In May 2016, Susan M.
Bazis was appointed as a
U.S. Magistrate Judge for
the District of Nebraska.
She began serving on the bench on January 1, 2017.
She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of
Magistrate Judge Thomas D. Thalken.
Judge Bazis received her undergraduate degree from
the University of Nebraska - Omaha in 1990 and her
law degree from Creighton University School of Law in
She began her legal career in private practice. From
1994 to 1996, she served as Assistant Public Defender
for the Douglas County Public Defenderís Office. From
1996 to 2007, she was in private practice.
In 2007, she was appointed as a judge for Douglas
Countyís 4th Judicial District, where she has served as
the presiding judge since 2010.
During her time as a county judge, she served on a
number of Nebraska Supreme Court Committees,
including the Commission on Guardianships and
Conservatorships and the Case Management
Committee for County Courts. She was the recipient of
the Nebraska Supreme Courtís Distinguished Judge Ė
Service to the Community Award, the National College
of Probate Judges Treat Award for Excellence, and the
Nebraska State Bar Foundationís Public Service Award.
