Retirement: Judge Jon S. Scoles

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jon S. Scoles of the Northern District of Iowa is retiring December 31, 2016. He was sworn in on March 20, 2007.
Jon Stuart Scoles was born in Charles City, Iowa in 1951. He received his undergraduate degree in math with teaching certification from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973. After three years of teaching math and coaching, he entered law school, graduating with honors from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1979.
He began his legal career in Mason City, Iowa as a law clerk in the 2A Judicial District of Iowa. In 1980, he became a partner in the firm of DeVries, Scoles and Price, and in 1986, he was appointed as an Iowa District Court Judge. He served on that bench for 20 years, including as Assistant Chief Judge from 1992 to 2005 and as Chief Judge from 2005 until his appointment to the federal bench. Congratulations, Judge Scoles!
