United States Courts in the Eighth Circuit

The Committee met several times during the past reporting period. In addition to addressing set agenda items during each meeting, most meetings included "history in the making" (guest speakers were invited to report on current issues or court cases with great historical potential) and book report segments. These additional topics were well-received by committee members and will continue to be regular items on the agenda. During the reporting period, the following projects were identified as initiatives of the committee:

  • judicial papers preservation project
  • update and broaden information avialable on the History page of the District of Minnesota external web site
  • planned and developed a historical display on the Honorable Earl R. Larson for Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference and display at the Minneapolis courthouse

    In honor of the Landmark Center's Centennial Legal Series, Judge John Tunheim (Board member of the Eighth Circuit Historical Society and committee member of the Minnesota branch) conducted the Altman v. Minnesota Corrections Department trial at the Landmark Center. The Landmark Center is the former St. Paul federal courthouse.
