On October 17, 2017, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit held a special session to unveil the painted portrait of Judge Diane E. Murphy, the first woman appointed to the Court, in 1994.

Over 125 state and federal judges, distinguished guests, colleagues, law clerks, court staff, and family gathered in Courtroom 5A of St. Paul’s Warren E. Burger Federal Building to honor this woman of so many significant firsts.

Speakers verbally portrayed Judge Murphy and her remarkable achievements. They included Walter Mondale, former Vice President of the United States; Chief Judge Ruben Castillo, Northern District of Illinois; Frances Cook, U.S. Department of Justice; Justice Margaret Chutich, Minnesota Supreme Court and former law clerk; David Lebedoff, Of Counsel, Gray Plant Mooty. Portrait artist Jason Bouldin made remarks on the portrait, and Judge Murphy’s two granddaughters unveiled her portrait. Chief Judge Lavenski Smith accepted the portrait on behalf of the Court.

A reception followed. On exhibit was Judge Murphy’s three-panel display with accompanying biographical brochure, created by the U.S. Courts Library.
