On October 19, 2010, the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals held a special session to memorialize The Honorable Gerald W. Heaney, who died on June 22, 2010, in Duluth, Minnesota, at the age of 92. The memorial session was held in St. Paul's U.S. Courthouse during a court week.

Speakers included Judge James B. Loken, Judge Myron H. Bright, Judge Diana E. Murphy, Judge William H. Webster, Robert J. Hennessey on behalf of the judge’s law clerks, Daniel Fanning as representative of Senator Al Franken, and William Heaney on behalf of the Heaney family.
