The Honorable George G. Fagg was appointed to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1982. He assumed senior status in 1999 and retired in 2006. His legacy is one of “hard work, intellectual honesty, clear thinking, plain talk, and warm friendship.” He was known for his prolific production of succinct opinions.

Judge Fagg died on July 14, 2015, in Johnston, Iowa, at the age of 81. He is survived by his six children and twelve grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Jane of almost 50 years.

On March 4, 2016, the United States Court of Appeals convened a special memorial session to honor Judge Fagg.

Over 100 federal and state court judges, colleagues, past law clerks, friends, and family gathered in the Des Moines federal courthouse’s first floor courtroom to commemorate Judge Fagg. Chief Judge William Jay Riley presided over the ceremony, and U.S. Circuit Judge Steven M. Colloton served as Master of Ceremonies. Speakers included retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Russell J. Hill of the Southern District of Iowa; Allen E. Brennecke, retired Iowa attorney and past president of the Iowa State Bar Association; Randall D. Armentrout, Law Clerk to Judge Fagg, 1992-1994; Chuck Grassley, U.S. Senator for Iowa and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary; and U.S. Circuit Judge David R. Hansen.

Excerpts of Judge Fagg's oral history interview were played on a large monitor during the ceremony, and a memorial display was on exhibit during the reception that followed.
